Couple Finds Philanthropic Match in a Community They Love

When Gene and Martha Miller decided to move to Meadow Active Lifestyle Community on Masonic Homes Kentucky’s Louisville Campus, they were looking to move closer to relatives and to create a plan for their future. They found what they were looking for, and so much more.

“We’ve lived here six years, and moved into Meadow just two weeks after it opened,” said Gene, a retired banker.

Martha, a former school principal said, “When we started thinking about doing another big house downsize, we asked ourselves; ‘What would happen if one of us needed to go to assisted living? What if even both of us needed extra care.’”

Through Life Care, the Millers are  investing in their future care through an initial entrance fee and a monthly service fee that provides them priority access to all the levels of care and services on Masonic Homes Kentucky’s Louisville Campus.

Over the course of six years, the Millers have fully embraced their new lifestyle. They are mainstays at activities, attend social events and take advantage of amenities, especially the Art Studio. Gene also volunteered at Sproutlings Pediatric Day Care & Preschool. Their wonderful experiences led the Miller’s to include Masonic Homes Kentucky as a part of their philanthropic endeavors allowing them to invest in their community’s future.

“Rick Reeve, senior vice president of development and fraternal relations, met with us to discuss a new construction project, an all-season, multi-generational Activity Center with an indoor play area for Sproutlings,” said Gene. “I was really impressed with the plan, and could even envision hosting my family for picnics.”

Gene added, “I also saw how this would be a real plus for the whole campus and even attract younger retirees to move-in. So we chose to invest in the project and were honored as James Garnett Fellows.”

Garnett’s vision lives on today through donors like the Millers.

“We consider it a privilege to live here,” said Gene. “It’s an investment that provides for our future and estate protection for our kids. And, it’s also a way for us to give back to a community we love.”

Members of the James Garnett Fellowship are recognized annually at our Olmsted Society dinner and receive invitations to exclusive events. Learn more about this giving opportunity.
